Cambodian Thinker Kimlong Ly Dubbed the “Damien Hirst of Philosophy” Ahead of London Exhibition

LONDON, June 2026: Cambodian essayist and thinker Kimlong Ly has been described by admirers as the “Damien Hirst of Philosophy” as he prepares to host an exhibition of his writings at the Portsoken Community Centre on 30 June 2026.

Unlike traditional philosophical exhibitions, Kimlong’s event will not focus on his political, sociological, or academic philosophical works. Instead, visitors will encounter a collection of essays that he categorises as “satirical philosophy”, a genre that combines philosophical inquiry, minimalism, humour, and social criticism in unconventional ways.

The exhibition will feature several of Kimlong’s most discussed essays, including “In Defence (Not) of Genocide”, “Society”, “Hegel on the Absence of Thought”, “Many Reasons to Be a Good Person”, and “An Idiot’s Critique of The Myth of Sisyphus”. Through these works, he challenges readers to engage with philosophical ideas through satire, contradiction, and deliberately minimalistic framing.

Observers have drawn comparisons between Kimlong’s writing and the work of British contemporary artist Damien Hirst. Much as Hirst transformed expectations of modern art through shock, symbolism, and conceptual experimentation, Kimlong has sought to challenge conventional philosophical writing by abandoning rigid academic forms in favour of essays that blend absurdity, criticism, and minimalism.

Born in Cambodia, Kimlong has received growing attention in the United Kingdom for his distinctive literary style. His writings have attracted readers from both academic and non-academic backgrounds, with supporters praising his ability to make philosophical discussions more accessible while simultaneously unsettling familiar assumptions.

The upcoming exhibition offers a rare opportunity for the public to engage directly with Kimlong’s works. Organisers say the exhibition aims to encourage visitors to explore philosophy not as a discipline confined to universities, but as a creative and provocative form of public thought.

The exhibition will be held at the Portsoken Community Centre on 30 June 2026. Visitors will have the opportunity to view selected essays, learn about Kimlong’s approach to satirical philosophy, and engage with a body of work that continues to challenge the boundaries between philosophy, humour, and contemporary art.

Whether regarded as a philosopher, essayist, satirist, or thinker, Kimlong Ly’s exhibition promises to be one of the more unusual intellectual events on London’s cultural calendar this summer.
